Welcome to Southside Elementary School's

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

for English Language Learners (ELLs)!

In our program students learn and improve upon English skills in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. English Language Learners receive support in the mainstream classroom and instruction in a small group ESL setting. Students participate in small group ESL instruction 1-5 times a week for 30 minutes based on each student's English proficiency level and grade level. In the small group ESL setting, students receive a variety of instruction such as oral language and vocabulary development, literacy support, and writing practice.  Our goal is to improve English proficiency while reinforcing the skills and objectives taught in the mainstream classroom.

Instruction for all ESL students is guided by the WIDA Consortium's English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards. For this information and further explanations please visit:  http://wida.wceruw.org/standards/elp.aspx

My name is Katie Shaw. I am the English as a Second Language teacher at Southside Elementary School (grades K-3) and Meadowview Intermediate School (grade 5).  My goal is to help students improve their English language skills, and give them the support they need to achieve their goals. I challenge students to grow not only academically but also socially and culturally.  I work hard to make my classroom a place where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their opinions and ideas, and an area that they enjoy coming to each day.
